Alice, who was awarded the MBE two years ago for services to fashion, works hard, often getting up at 5am and working overnight and through the weekends to get her work done.

The daughter of a farmer and the eldest of four children, Alice grew up on a farm where her 'wonderfully eccentric' father Julian brewed cider, and she credits her carefree, liberal upbringing with much of her success.

Her childhood, in which she would milk goats before breakfast and ride a horse and cart to school, was 'beautiful, free, properly English,' says Alice. 'Though my world is extremely different now, I can't imagine not having that lifestyle. I go back whenever I can; it's so peaceful down there.'

Though idyllic, her younger years were also, she admits, 'rather wild' with all-night raves, partying at Glastonbury, getting in trouble at school for her short skirts and orange hair.

From an early age though, Alice would make her own jewellry and sell it to the neighbours from the family barn, before moving to London to study textiles at Central Saint Martins while working as a waitress.

Temperley says she is obsessed by all things British, having designed a collection for the Queen's Coronation Festival in the summer and while working in New York she was nicknamed Little Miss English.

'I love this country; I am so proud of my roots,' she explains.

Fashion still battling with concerns over the treatment of its models and rumours of eating disorders. Says Alice: 'It's really sad. Models are so young – they come to castings at 13, 14 – and you have to look after them and respect them.

'There are big problems in some parts of the industry. A lot of it is people who aren't happy with themselves trying to prove a point.'

Alice was working so hard that she returned to work just two days after her son, Fox London Temperley von Bennigsen Mackiewicz was born: 'My baby happened at the beginning of the recession, so I had no say in the matter,' she says, and adds that motherhood has 'totally changed' her.
